1950년대 중반 록큰롤 역사를 화려하게 장식했던 록커 버디 홀리(본명 찰스 하딘 홀리 Charles Hardin Holley, 1936년 9월 7일-1959년 2월 3일, 향년 22세)의 짧은 삶과 인생, 음악 여정을 다루고 있다.

 

작가 로버트 기틀러(Robert Gittler)의 <버디 홀리 Buddy Holly: His Life and Music>, 존 골드로젠(John Goldrosen)의 <홀리 전기 The biography of Holly> 등을 참고로 해서 스티브 래시(Steve Rash)가 극화했다.

 

텍사스 루복(Lubbock, Texas) 출신의 버디 홀리는 죽마고우인 드러머 제시 찰스(Jesse Charles), 베이스 연주자 레이 밥 시몬즈(Ray Bob Simmons)와 의기투합해서 ‘크리켓 The Crickets’을 결성하면서 음악 활동을 시작한다.

 

1959년 2월 3일 공연을 위해 이동 중 아이오와주 클리어 레이크(Clear Lake, Iowa) 상공에서 비행기 추락사고로 동승했던 아티스트 리치 발렌스(Ritchie Valens), 빅 봅퍼(The Big Bopper) 등과 함께 사망하고 만다.

 

사고 소식을 접한 돈 맥클린은 1971년 발라드 ‘American Pie’를 발표하면서 가사 중 이들의 참극 사고에 대해 ‘음악이 죽은 날 The Day the Music Died’이라고 추도한다.

‘That'll Be the Day’ ‘Peggy Sue’ 등의 곡은 비틀즈(Beatles), 롤링 스톤(the Rolling Stones), 에릭 클랩튼(Eric Clapton), 엘튼 존(Elton John) 등에게 많은 음악적 감화를 준 것으로 알려진다.

 

1986년 ‘록큰롤 명예의 전당 ’the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘에 헌정된다.

 

롤링 스톤 매거진(Rolling Stone magazine)은 ‘위대한 아티스트 100 100 Greatest Ar

tists’에서 그를 13위로 랭크 시킨다.
